"" "NIGHT FISHING" RNLI Mackerel Competition 2004 -- The idea sprung in a drink-filled blurr one Thursday night a number of weeks ago. Two of the more "matured" members of the club, Alan Downes and Eric Montgomery, were reminiscing about a competition which was held many moons ago, all the anglers were given a length of 4lb line and told to go catch mackerel. The only two fish caught on the night were by Alan and Eric, and Alan eventually won because in his own words "his was better presented". The challenge was thrown down, "lets do it again". So Mark Shortt, our club secretary started calling around to see if anyone was interested. The rules were simple, 30euros for each boat to enter, you can have as many on each boat as you wished as long as it was safe. You were allowed one hook at a time, although you could have as many attractors as you wanted. You had to join your hook to your main line by a piece of 3lb line, of which everyone was given a yard (although some lost their's before even leaving the harbour.) My boat had me, Fergie Griffith, Steve Guest, and Dave "Bullet" Kellaghan in it. We motored everywhere, with fly rods, and elastic bands, fancy rigs, and all sorts, but didn't even get a bite. The other boats at least had the odd run which all broke off with the exception of the winning boat. Eric Montgomery, Alan Downes, Pat Early, and Mark Shortt, spent the night at the back of Bray Head searching for the winner. All but Eric were getting bites but were breaking off. Eric at least managed to bad two small pollock, but unfortunately they didn't count. Pat was the first to bag a mackerel, quietly at the back of the boat, but her position was soon to be bettered when Mark Shortt eventually landed the fish of the night. We had a good turnout considering the conditions and short notice. 140euros was raised for the RNLI, and I'm sure the Harbour Bar made a few bob out of us afterwards. A lot to be considered and talked about, but we haven't heard the last of this competition. Role on next year. But unfortunately, the weather man got it right again, 55 mill's of water and big south-easterly winds stopped us in our tracks. The next date for this competition is now September 12th. Contact the Bray Head club for details, or your own club secretary. Check out this link to see the latest league table. The next Leinster League Shore competition is tomorrow Saturday 28th in Tinnavara, Co. Wexford. Check back next week for the news on this event, I'm hoping to fish it myself and I believe we should have around 15 lads from the local clubs heading down. ************************* Thanks this week goes to Larry Byrne for all the links without his contribution I'd be pulling my hair out. ************************** "Mac-Ur-Diddle" ><)))> ______________________________________________________________________________________

"" "The HARBOUR BAR" Wally O'Sullivan Open 2004 -- It lived up to all our expectations. What a blast was had by all. With just under 50 people turning up on the day to fish this well supported competition, it was always going to be something special. The forecast was for rain and freshening winds. They got he rain wrong, but the sea rose up nearing the end of the day, and even the hardiest of anglers were wondering if it would have been easier to just call it a day. Anyway, by 3.40pm all were back safely on land, no casualties were reported, so it was down to the job of the organizers to tot the scores and get the presentation on the way before everyone started seeing pink elephants. Everyone managed to catch fish which is always a bonus especially when you're running a Novice competition. With some really great cards coming in for the federation members section. The presentation was held in the Harbour Bar and was well attended. Mark Shortt and Liam O'Callaghan presented the goodies to all the winners. Mark Divignat was the outright winner of the Members section which saw him walking away with a TV/DVD combo. On the visitors side, Mr. Joe O'Brien battled well to win with 25 fish, Joe also walked away with a TV/DVD combo. Of the 48 anglers who fished, nearly every single person got a prize which shows the great sponsorship this competition attracts. Even our very own Eric Montgomery and our very good Friend, Tracey O'Brien ended up getting the booby prizes, well done to them both for being such great sports. All that's left to say is THANKS to all the sponsors, all the competitors, the O'Sullivan family, and all the fish which went back alive, see you all next year, I'm sure Wally himself would have been very happy with the way it went! The kids are battling well. A slap on the back is well deserved by Ray, DOS, Ricky and Mick, without who there wouldn't be a junior league. Check out this link to see the latest league table. ************************* Thanks this week goes to all of you for sticking by the site even though nothing has appeared here over the past two weeks. I promise to give it more priority going forward. Hope you all enjoy the photos. ************************** "The waiting is over !" ><)))> ______________________________________________________________________________________

"" The Backbone of the Club ! Sorting out the Club Pen -- Our pen had a super bit of work done to it over the August Bank holiday weekend. Thanks to materials provided by Terry O'Sullivan and the hard work contributed by the select few members who always seems to be there to give a hand out. We were able to erect a long over due fence at the back of the pen. Given the loss of two engines from it last year and the damage done to some boats by people entering it from the railway line, I'd like to see anyone try lumping an engine out of it now. Click here to see the men at work. Written by Paul Robinson (Bray Sea Angler's) ************************** *************************
Trip to the East Codling Bank -- It may have been my birthday, but that was the only good thing to happen to me that day. After getting invited to take a spin out the the East Codling bank, 13.5 miles off Bray, I jumped at the chance. The sea was like a lake, the sun was that hot it boiling the water, we couldn't ask for more...well...as few fresh mackerel would have been nice. They were like gold dust. After a solid hour looking for them, we ended up with four. We spent a good four hours on the bank, with the first fish, a small Huss, being landed by myself, little did I know that it was going to be my last for the day, but then again what do you expect when the other's have ya buried in the cabin making tea. Anyway, what I lacked, Brian Whelan and Steve Guest made up for, with some fantastic Spurs and Huss being landed all around me. At one point, we managed to weigh Stevie's biggest which came in at over 14lb's, a clear specimen. Check out the photos we took of the day.
