Bass Fishing Tips - Bass Fishing In Cold Weather
Bass fishing is a really popular sport that can be enjoyed by anyone with the knowledge of a few Bass fishing basics. All species of Bass are some of the most sought after fish, as they are great fun to catch, and offer some of the best sport, both from the shore and from a boat. One of the first Bass fishing basics to learn will obviously be the bait. This can be live bait such as peeler or soft back crabs, these are really fine baits for Bass. A crab is a peeler when it is in the process of losing its old shell, (to test if a crab is a peeler, try lifting the rear end of its shell; it should come away easily). A crab is a soft back when it has already discarded its old shell but before its new...
Many angler use Powerbait for fishing, especially trout fishing. For this article, I'm going to be specifically referring to the Powerbait that comes in jars or pre-formed chunks, and these types of Power baits are mainly used for catching trout. Powerbait is most effective on stocked trout (you know, the trout that the fish and game department plants in lakes and rivers?) My fishing buddies and I have always joked that the government must feed the trout Powerbait when they are growing up in the hatcheries, because they seem to be addicted to the stuff. The most effective way to use Powerbait is with a bottom rig, which I will explain in this article. The first thing that needs to be understood...
Companies have been riding the crest of bass fishing interest for decades now. The hobby has "hooked" many people, and they have elevated this onetime recreational activity to a legitimate sport. Outdoors shops, gear and even businesses have been built in that time, and many other peripheral areas have benefited. More and more people are starting to realize what the buzz is all about today. The sport of bass fishing is about a whole lot more then just netting a bass. With tournaments, growing in popularity, it's become more and more about landing that perfect trophy bass. To someone who is just starting out, it can seem overwhelming. Probably the very first thing to cover is some of the lures that...
Every bass fisherman wants to catch more bass. Even the pros share this sentiment with the rest of us. But for the beginner, it is a little different. As a beginner, you can and will catch more bass with plastics. The use of plastic lures is one of the easiest techniques to learn. There are a few things to know that will help you along the way. Shapes Plastic lures come in a variety of shapes. Everything from frogs to crawfish, worms and even smaller fish is available. To have a well rounded tackle box, you need to have a wide variety of different shaped plastics at your disposal. The one you use in any given situation should match what is naturally fond in the area you are fishing. For instance...

The topic of how to catch walleye in the summer is a popular one among walleye enthusiasts, and the difference between spring and summer walleye fishing very much resembles day and night. If landing a big one is the desire, tactics, location and patience must all come into play. Learning the habits of these fish and understanding where they go and when can bring in several walleye during what many believe is an off time. Location Is Everything While the shallows are often walleye paradise in the spring, once spawning is over the fish often move on to deeper, cooler waters in the hot summer months. To find them, anglers need to seek out the right location. Tips for finding them in the summer include...

Sport Angling in Alaska
For many angles, nothing beats sport angling. If this describes you, sport angling in Alaska is simply something you need to experience at least once, but as often as you can! Alaska, the United States' 49th state, is home to a variety of different vacation options. Trips to this state can take the form of camping, an Alaskan cruise, or just a sightseeing trip to experience the many different types of wildlife and glacier formations. Another type of vacation can also take place here; a angling trip. While Alaska is known primarily for its salmon angling (for eating), sport angling in Alaska is also a great way to spend some time in "The Last Frontier". In order to go sport angling in Alaska, you'll...
How is it that in an age of technology and electronics, something as 'primitive' as bass fishing is luring in new avid anglers year after year. So much so that as soon as they hear something new and fancy that catches their interests, they will dive into it and try to get as much out of it as possible. One common theme running through bass anglers (tournament or recreational) is "Where are the what...? Where are the bass!" Even for the experts. When they are fishing in a body of water that they have never fished before, after dropping the boat into the water, they will start to wonder, where is the best place to fish? I will try to unravel the mysteries of finding areas best for bass fishing...
Putting a Line on Cats
With all the talk about catfishing rigs of various sorts, the focus is frequently on the terminal gear, and the bait, and the rod and reel, and where and how to fish for the Big'uns, but not much is often said about the line used to fish for these monsters. To cover this subject, though, there are several key considerations to think about. For one thing, catfishing is a sport, right? As such, putting a line in the water isn't just about hooking into a fish and hauling it in, but it's also about fighting the fish on its own terms, and seeing if skill can triumph over sheer power, and land a big cat, in the offing. On the other end of this balance, is using insufficient gear for the intensity of the...
Live Bait Fishing
For many anglers live bait fishing is the best form of fishing. In this article I'm going to outline some great tips and techniques that will make your live bait fishing much more successful and rewarding. In my mind, live bait fishing can be as much of an art form as "flea flicking" (this is what my fishing mentor called fly fishing) has ever been proclaimed to be. In order for this to be true you have to take your live bait fishing a little more seriously than tying on a #8 hook, clipping a red and white bobber onto your line, and attempting to thread a live worm onto your hook; then chunking this into the water and calling it fishing. What I just described is what gives this type of fishing a...
What is Fishing Bait?
There is such an assortment of bait that it is difficult to recommend any particular color, size, or type as the best. There are more than a thousand good baits on the market. All will catch fish at some time or another. Fishing baits usually weigh from ¼ to an ounce to three ounces. The most popular weight preferred by the majority of bait casters is the 5/8-ounce bait, while the average is between ½ and 3 quarters of an ounce. Baits can either be used as a whole or cut into chunks. Anglers can also use dead or live baits. The Different Types of Bait There is a wide array of organisms being used as fishing baits. Among the different types used in fishing, the commonly used are the small...

Whether you are fishing on one of the many lakes in the state or maybe one of the fine river systems, there are many species of fish to go after, and it's all here for the taking. The prime target of fisherman and ladies is the Walleye. Our waterways produce many Walleye for the taking. Devil's Lake, North Dakota is probably the premier walleye fishery in this country. Devil's Lake is the largest natural body of water in North Dakota. Fisherman come from all over the country to get a chance at catching one of these trophy walleye, here in the Devil's Lake area. North Dakota is loaded with many, I do mean many...

Bass fishing with topwater baits is without a doubt the most fun you can have fishing for large or smallmouth bass. People watch these bass tournaments on the tube and see all these pros using plastic and spinner baits jigs and crankbaits, forget about the fun and excitement you get with topwater baits. Topwater baits create great action and stories to pass on to family and fishing friends. The best time I find for topwater bass fishing is in summer, the colder the water the slower the response, and the more you have to work that bait. Early morning and evening are best for topwater bass fishing. Of course weather effects your choice of lures also, on a bright sunny day it is better to have a light...
Fishing With Live Worms As Bait
For those of you who enjoy fishing with live worms, I've got some tips and techniques that will help you become a much more successful angler. Many people think of fishing with live worms as simply "threading" a live worm onto a hook, clipping a red & white bobber onto your line, casting this into the water, and calling it good. If this, or some manifestation of this is what you call fishing with live worms, hopefully this article will enlighten you. Fishing with a live worm, to me, is as much of an art form as fly fishing has ever been described to be. It's simply that it has to be done properly, and not like was described above. For live worm fishing to be as effective and productive as it can...
The question many bass fisherman face when it comes to selecting the right rod for the right lure, is how on earth do I select the right rod, and do I really need 15-20 rods? Well the answer is Yes, and No. The analogy I like to use is this: When you go golfing, do you take only your putter? Absolutely not because then you can not drive the ball off the tee very far! You would never even make it to the green to use the putter. The same is true with fishing. There are different applications to be used with different fishing techniques. For flipping and pitching, a lot depends on your height. A taller person will usually benefit from going with a 7 footer, while some one might hight (5ft. is more...
Tackle for the Average Bass Fisherman
The fishing rod is the first basic piece of tackle the average bass fisherman needs to consider. I recommend a medium or medium light action graphite spinning rod. I advise buying a rod six foot long. This rod can be used in a variety of different fishing conditions. As you become more experienced you will see the need for more specialized rods at times. I have always used Berkley or Fenwick rods and found them to always be up to the task at hand. You should purchase your rod and reel simultaneously. I advise mounting the reel on the rod and holding it before you make a choice. The rod and reel combo should feel right. Hold the rod direct above where the reel is seated. If you point the rod...
Tips For Fishing With Worms
Okay, before I begin this article let me preface it by stating that the term 'with worms' in the title "tips for fishing with worms", is referring to live worms. Not the multi colored pieces of rubber that many Bass anglers are so enamored with. This article, and the tips contained in it , are for those of you who enjoy fishing with what Hank Hill referred to as, "The good old American worm". The kind that live in the dirt, and can be found almost anywhere in the world. The biggest and most important tip in the world of fishing with worms is as obvious as the nose on your face, but many anglers tend to overlook it. That tip is that a worm should look like, well a worm. This sounds obvious, I...
During the early to middle '90s, before I had any thoughts of becoming a striped bass guide or professional striped bass angler, I used to pursue these tackle busting brutes solely at night with artificial lures. My all time favorite lure of choice was the Rebel 6" Spoonbill Minnow. My preferred colors where blue back with silver sides, black back and yellow back. Another of my favorite lures for night fishing for stripers was the Cotton Cordell Redfin. I would normally start night fishing for stripers on my favorite lakes here in Virginia around the first week of March. The fish at this time of year would start to move up onto shallow points, into creeks and along flats to feed aggressively at...
With the rising costs of fishing charters and fuel prices, I like to make every fishing trip as productive as possible. Anglers can better their chances of having a successful outing if they bring the appropriate gear and equipment to tackle the many scenarios that a saltwater angler may encounter while offshore or at the local islands. Depending on the destination and targeted fish species, I carry one of two tackle boxes that I have assembled with specific terminal tackle and accessories, designed to serve two totally different purposes. When fishing on trips of three days or less, I normally carry my local tackle box, which is a soft backpack style bag, complete with tackle trays and several...
Night Fishing
One of the first things you may think of when you hear about night fishing is "Why do people do that"? The answer is that many people night fish in the south since the heat is unbearable in the summer months. Consequently, the fish will stay further underwater to keep cool. So the only option is to fish at night when they will be closer to the surface. The most common fish accessible at night is the bass as it is a sedentary fish that stays roughly in the same area both day and night. They are quite a hardy fish and can be found in unusual spots away from the typical riverbank setting that most people associate with fishing. Night fishing requires a lot of patience and understanding of your...
Learn to Become a Bass Fishing Professional
There is something just magic about a day spent fishing. It's a terrific stress buster. Bass fishing reigns supreme in my book and I just can't get enough of the most fabulous sport in the world, fishing. Sounds crazy, but bass fishing can be so relaxing as well as getting your blood flowing. There's no doubt how relaxing bass fishing can be; but you must be aware at all times as you simultaneously kick back and wait for the fish to do their thing. There are some things that defy explanation, like how some folks take to bass fishing right away and love it, and others just can't stomach it. Yes or no, there's no middle ground. Having said all that, you may not understand right away if you are new to...
Best Bass Fishing Flies
Bass are ravenous eaters and are known to eat prey up to half of their own length. Because bass swallow their prey whole, the size of bass fishing flies must be smaller than the width of the bass mouth. Being hungry predators, they usually seek out the largest prey they can find that will fit into their mouths. The movement of the fishing fly is critical to attracting the bass. Bass quickly jump at the chance to swallow anything moving, but also regularly spit out a would-be meal, perhaps due to the taste or texture. When bass fishing, it's important to use fishing flies with a strategic design and hook position. In this article, you'll read about our top picks for bass fishing flies: Deer Hair...

Deep Sea Fishing Tips
Deep sea fishing is a wonderful and extremely enjoyable activity. Here are some tips that will make your salt water fishing adventure even better. 1. Watch the signs If you see birds e.g. Seagulls that are feasting on small bait-type fishes, there are probably larger game-type fish below the surface of the water. Also, look for floating wood or debris. In most cases when you chance upon a large floating wood, you would find a large game fish in the area even encountering dolphin. 2. Stop, Snook and Listen Fishing for snooks is quite similar as fishing for bass. Snooks like to be around ledges, posts and rocks. 3. Crabs for full moon During full moons use soft crab imitations as bait. That's the...
Illinois is definitely not known for its excellent walleye fishing. Most anglers that live in Illinois will plan their fishing trip to Wisconsin, Minnesota, Canada or Lake Erie when they want to fill their coolers with walleye. There are some places that you can consistently catch walleye and sauger and if you are within a short drive to these waters, you can catch some nice fish for the dinner table. When most people think of walleye, they typically think of fishing lakes and rivers farther to the north, but in Illinois, it seems like some of the best walleye waters are to the south. Some of the lakes in the southern part of the state that have plenty of walleye in them are Lake Carlton, Clinton...

It has been a long hard winter and one of the most anticipated events in the spring is wetting a line on open water. While ice fishing is fun and productive, there is nothing like being out in the boat after taking a few months off. What really adds to the open water fishing experience is the thrill of catching slab crappies. There are many fishermen who wait in the spring for the crappies to move in to spawn. Don't get me wrong; if you find crappies on their spawning beds, the fishing can be fantastic! But why wait to the spawn when you can have your cake and eat it too. Crappie fishing right after ice out can be equally rewarding. The water temperature right after ice out will be very frigid...
In this article I will discuss the best artificial lures you can use to catch Largemouth Bass. Each is good only in the specific situations I will describe. In my opinion the spinnerbait is hands down the number one bass catching lure on the market. When selecting a spinnerbait to use you have to choose between two different varieties of blades. Spinnerbaits with willow leaf blades are designed to attract the bass primarily through sight. Spinnerbaits with a blade that is round with a cupped end are designed to create vibration and attract bass through sound. Spinnerbaits are without a doubt the most versatile artificial lure you can effectively use. By varying your retrieve you can use them as...
Smallmouth tend to move back and forth from shallow to deep water, depending on the season and temperature of the water. They can usually be found in the shallows in the spring, fall and winter. They will escape the heat of the summer by occupying deeper waters. This is a general rule, as there can be day to day and lake to lake variations. As the water warms up in the spring, you'll find certain areas of the lake to be warmer than others. Focus on these areas... Smallmouth will likely be schooling this time of year. You can't beat a hard jerkbait for finding schools. You can cover a lot of ground quick with a jerkbait. Search out these fish in 5 to 10 feet of water. They may also be in much deeper...
Largemouth bass are one of the most popular types of fish in the United States. You can easily write hundreds of different articles on bass fishing and I will continue to write about the different techniques that you can use to catch bass, but this article will cover the basics of bass fishing and how to catch them through the seasons. In the spring, you will find these fish moving into the shallows to spawn. In lakes that have crappie, you will know that the bass spawn is coming just after the crappie spawn. Check the local fishing reports and talk to the bait shops to see what's going on with the fishing in your area. If the crappie are spawning, it's about that time to get ready for...

There are a lot of reasons for this success, as more and more bass fishers are discovering. The world's best bass fishermen have made it their custom to come here for that very reason. Despite its tremendous popularity today, the story of bass fishing is not a particularly old one to the surprise of many. The term bass is used for several species including largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, Kentucky or spotted bass, and several other less common types. The decline in trout populations due to pollution and rising water temperatures in the Eastern rivers close to large populations centers led to a...
Effective Live Worm Angling
It seems that every person on the planet who has ever heard of the term "fishing" knows that live worms are a good bait for fishing. What's interesting about this is that although everyone and their brother is aware of the fact that live worms are a great bait for fishing, almost no one is aware of how to fish a live worm effectively. You see, effective live worm angling, doesn't involve simply "threading" a live worm onto a hook and calling it good. Sure, this is what most anglers do, but that doesn't mean that it the most effective way to fish with live worms. Not by a long shot. Effective live worm angling involves one simple, yet very important piece of fishing gear. What is that piece of...

When fishing for bass there are a variety of baits that work. The key is to understand why each of them work and to only use the correct bait for the situation you are presented with. In my opinion the spinnerbait is the best bait a bass fisherman can use. It is a versatile lure that you can use in a majority of the situations you will encounter on the water. There are two main varieties of spinnerbaits. One has willow leaf blade and is designed to provide maximum visual attractant to the fish. The blade design creates a large surface to reflect the available sunlight and make the bait visible to the fish. This type of spinnerbait should be used when you want to attract fish through a sight pattern...

Lake Musconetcong is located in northern New Jersey, between Sussex and Morris counties. It is actually part of Hopetcong State Park, and doesn't receive the notariety of its bigger brother Hopetcong or Greenwood Lake or any of the central Jersey waters. Yet, it is one of the best bass waters in northern New Jersey Years ago, this area was just swampland. It was flooded a long time ago to allow coal transporting barges to make their way to New York City along the Morris canal system. Efforts are being made right now, by the Lake Musconetcong Regional Planning Board, to insure that nature does not reclaim the land as a swamp. Their goal is to preserve the lake's recreational capabilities, bass...
Free Tips for Successful Halibut Fishing
Coming north on an Alaska halibut fishing trip can be exciting and a bit overwhelming. Dressing properly for your halibut fishing trip can make the difference between a good time and an uncomfortable time. The weather in Alaska no matter what time of year can be unpredictable. There are two certain precautions that one can take to make sure he or she isn't caught off guard. First, always dress in layers. Even in the peak of summer the mornings can be darn right cool, sometimes even cold. Your base layer should always be a quick wicking synthetic. I always advise against cotton fabrics. Cotton isn't near as breathable nor has the wicking power of the synthetic garments. Cotton, when wet takes forever...
Anchor Fishing - Plunking For Salmon
The Anchor fishing or plunking rig system basically uses the same equipment as backbouncing. The main difference is where the boat is going to be - in one spot where you throw a boat anchor out and hold, so that your line can bounce in accordance with great water lanes or holes that feel salmon will likely be holding. Most anglers will hold their setup in the water at about sixty degrees down river allowing the Springs or other salmonid to swim up to the bait that you are presenting to them - Kwikfish are often used in these scenarios as they have been known to be extremely effective. If you ever have the privilege of fishing waters that are classified in the regulations or guided, book or reserve...

Crappies are versatile fish which means they can adapt very well to changes and they grow in numerous numbers in the reservoirs that are full of structures where they make their home. They are also located in many of the lakes throughout the state as well...
Wading in the flats and fishing in St. George Sound was as soothing and relaxing an outing as I've had in years. Getting out of bed early, my brother in law and I left the rest of our vacationing family and drove the mile to St. George Island State Park, Florida. We'd scouted the area the day before and found that the boat landing area at the park wasn't deep enough to safely launch the boat. The island was still digging out of the sand due to Hurricane Dennis. Since we couldn't put the boat in the water there, we just pulled the truck, boat and trailer into a nice shady spot close to the water and decided to wade. It was a beautiful morning for wading and we almost had the whole bay to ourselves...
