************************** "Arklow South Beach February 27th, 2005" A Day's pleasure angling, -- Sunday, February 27th, 2005. Joined by a few friends, we decided to give Arklow South Beach a go to see what was happening in that neck of the woods, and we weren't disappointed.. This was the day that the Bray Outcasts had marked down for their Leinster League Beach Open, but cancelled it due to bad weather. But us hardy anglers didn't mind a bit of cold North-East wind in our faces! I managed to rustle up six men and myself for the outing. We hit Arklow beach on a dropping tide and had the whole beach to ourselves. 11.30am saw the first of the baits entering the water, everything from fresh lug, frozen sand eel, frozen mackerel, to "wraps" which is a term used to describe dried out black lugworm. Of all the baits the best cocktail of the day was, wraps & mackerel, it drove the flounder crazy. Our trip was supposed to finish at around 2.00pm so we could all get home early to watch the Rugby international between Ireland and England, but with fishing this good , we just couldn't leave. By 5.00pm I think we were all fished out, some of the older members, like Fergie Griffith were really starting to feel the cold, so with at least nine flounder each, most of which were well into the mid-30's (cm) we packed up and headed for the hills. For my first ever trip to Arklow beach, I can safely say I'd do it again, although a lot more anglers further up from us had a terrible day, but the wraps were dynamite. I was worried that we were low on other species, I'd be concerned if the flounder weren't around what we would have done, but then again.....that's fishing. Check out the rest of the photos HERE ! Myself and a number of the Bray Angling Crew ventured into the RDS Boat Show to mingle with the Hob-Nobs, or to put it another way, the "rich and famous". Ah, no better way to spend a Wednesday afternoon than skiving off on the Mitch from work with your friends to go in and wander through a massive array of boats! I had missed last years event and was eager to attend this year as I'm itching to sell on the trusty Warrior and move a little up in the world. But I was very disappointed to see an incredibly small collection of angling boats at this years events. We really were the "poor cousins" to the wealthy yachties, and when you think that you can buy a twenty two foot yacht for just over 20,000euros compared with a 22 foot Hellraiser or Avour 24 for a starting price of 70,000plus, you have to scratch your head and wonder. Anyway, the highlight of the show for me were, the little pike we found in a aquarium stuck in a corner of the exhibition, I'd never seen pike that small, really cool. ************************** Silent and Crisp! Pike League 2004-05 -- Check out how the League finished up from our Pike Correspondence team, ********** 13 February 2005 Pike League Final Leg Update River Suck Final
Pike League It was a lousy day weather wise
with gale force winds blowing and the river very high and running. We
were lucky that the rain held off with only a couple of showers which
did not last long. Only three fish caught with the Leggett's
keeping it in the family with Mick catching 2 the heaviest a 12lb beauty
and his son Keith catching a nice 8lb pike. Mick Corlette from Viking Tackle in Bray did us proud with prizes and I got a lovely rod and reel set as well as a voucher for €100 as overall winner. Written by Pat Murray (Bray

The lake proved good enough for one we had never fished before and therefore didn’t know the best spots to fish. It will certainly be getting a few more visits from yours truly. It was also great to see some movement in the league table especially young Conor Byrne jumping into 3rd place and showing old grumpy men like me how its done. Liam Doyle also showing a lot of consistency as he has now caught fish on every outing to go into 2nd place and put it up to me for the last leg on 13th Feb. Written by Pat Murray (Bray Sea Angler's) ********** 16th January Pike League Update We had a good day with 11 fishing and 16 fish caught ---
heaviest 11lb to Ronnie Young. D J Byrne and his son Conor
joined us driving up from Mountmellick in Laois
that’s what you call keen.I almost buried my jeep in a field and all the
lads had to give one almighty heave to get me out. Unfortunately I was so busy
I didn’t get any photos of the problem.Tony O'Connor won it with 3 fish for
14lb 7ozs, 2nd Ronnie Young with 2 fish for 12lb, 3rd
Pat Murray with 3 fish for 10lb 10ozs. Ronnie also got heaviest fish with
11lb. All fired up and raring to go. The first leg of the Leinster League, at this point who knows what the year will hold, you could fall away mid season, or stuggle to the end, or battle through out and be rewarded with a place on the Leinster team will some of he famous names like Sam Roche, Stephen Brennan, and other top rate quality anglers. For me I was just happy to be out on a beach after Christmas, last week was our interclub which I did myself proud in, so as far as this competition went, who knows what could happen. I was pegged about midway on Newcastle Beach, either side of me were a few of the lads from the Bray Outcasts, so even if the day was quiet, I'd have someone to talk to. Right from the off I was in to fish, thank god I had prepared my bait earlier. Every single cast with the exception of two say me land a fish, in most cases they were doubles. Now, you might wonder, why didn't I win, well, the truth of the matter is that I only managed to get four fish to measure 20cm or bigger. If his competition had of been 19cm, who knows what the outcome would have been. I calculated that given that I reeled in every ten minutes, and took about five minutes to get back out again, that's four casts an hour, and the competition was five hours, that's 20 casts at least, I reckon I easily had between 30 and 40 fish, and only four lousy fish to count, now that's hard luck! Check out this link for the Leinster Results for this competition. Written by Paul Robinson (Bray Sea Angler's)
