The Big Ones, Where to Find Them? People always ask me where I find my trophy Bass. They want to know what I look for, how deep I find them and what it is that makes a particular spot better for big lunker bass than ordinary ones. I've even been followed by other fisherman trying to find out where the big Bass are hiding. The answer to where to find the biggest bass is a surprisingly simple one. To understand this, we will need to learn the basics of social behavior and hierarchies among large mouth bass (and pretty much every other species in the animal kingdom). If you were a male bass, your main objective in life would be to eat as much as you can while avoiding being eaten yourself[..]

One of the most important points to get right when river fishing for carp is to know exactly where to fish. In other words, location, location, location! You want to locate a good feature somewhere along the river. These can be very similar to those found in lakes and ponds. Places where carp can hold up in piece and quiet are good places to start, especially if there is some kind of coverage. Some features worth looking for are: - reed beds - overhanging trees - flowing water - water outlet or inlets Overhanging trees and reeds can be common along a river so you may need to find those that have further potential to them. As an example, overhanging bushes or trees that are in places[..]

In my opinion the best combo of the '07 season is the Chronarch 100B from Shimano teamed with the Quantum 6'6" medium heavy PT Kevin Van Dam signature series rod. "Now there's a mouth full"! This combination is an excellent match, making it the most memorable from this past season. I have many combos on board in any given outing, but when I put the Chronarch and Quantum combo in my hands it feels right! You never know how good you have it until you try something else! It has something special, a confidence boost, and we all know darn well that confidence plays a major role in success! The Chronarch and Quantum duo is solid! It can take on anything the Bass can dish out! The Quantum PT[..]

The Largemouth Bass

largemouth bass fishing

In freshwater lakes, minnows can be seen swimming in quite large numbers. They try to hide in the shallows and reeds, to avoid becoming the next meal of a largemouth bass. Now and again they will venture into the shallows, looking for a juicy insect to feed upon. When the bass gets into the shallows chasing baitfish and insects, this is a real opportunity to use crankbaits and catch yourself a rake of lovely bass. A lovely summers day can be spent this way, and be rewarded for your patience. When bass are right in the shallow water and are on a feeding frenzy, one of the best techniques is to use little crankbaits on top of the water. Whilst the fish are feeding on flying insects, they[..]

During the spring, bass fishermen can have a blast fishing in shallow water. Not only can you catch some big bass in water less than 5 feet deep, but you can actually see these fish in the shallows. Two of the most important things that you can do to increase your odds of catching bass while sight fishing is to get a good pair of polarized sunglasses and a good trolling motor. No matter how well you think you can see through the water without glasses, you will see more fish and more importantly, you will spot them faster with polarized sunglasses. Polarized sunglasses help to block the light that is reflected by the light's surface, which allows you to see through the water better.[..]

As the weather gets colder, so does the water temperature. And just like people, fish tend to slow down outside and are not as active. During the summer, fast retrieves of lures like crank baits, rooster tails, top water lures and spinners works because fish like bass and pan fish are actively feeding. But when the weather starts to get cooler, the fish tend to slow down and feed less often. The first phase of fall fishing is to slow down, the second phase is to go smaller. When the weather first starts to get cool and you notice you're not catching as many fish as you once were, the best thing to do is slow down your retrieve. Experiment with different speeds until you start catching[..]

Usually when you see an article about fishing for bass in the winter the author always tells you to fish deep water. I am here to tell you just the opposite....fish shallow water in the winter. The lake I fish most of the time is pretty small. The whole lake is 41 acres. Yep, that's not a typo, it's 41 acres. I fish this lake all spring, summer and fall but like to fish it in the winter a few days after a cold front passes and the temperature warms up just a little. Since I fish it all year, I know where the wood in the water is in the shallows and that is the area that I fish. The bass will come up to the edge of the bank in a couple of feet of water to warm themselves up. I like[..]

If you've been fishing for a while, then perhaps you already have acquired a large amount of fishing tackle, and experience, and know exactly what you want and need from your fly rod. However, if you're new to fishing, then you might not know what you should look for when choosing a new fishing rod. Here's what you need to know. 1. If you know what sort of sort or fish you'll be catching, then you might want a more suitable rod. Some anglers prefer a different rod for salmon and trout fishing. Maybe you can only have one rod, and want it to be capable of catching whatever you want to catch. 2. Alaska salmon trolling is one of four ways to catch salmon. The others are drift gillnetting, set gillnetting, and purse seining. Since none of the gear from any of these methods comes into contact with the seafloor, salmon fishing methods are not destructive to nearby habitats and are one reason why this seafood is considered an ocean-friendly option. Gillnets and purse seines require large nets that trap and tangle fish in mesh and netting, while trolling uses baited hooks. There are two different type of trollers: manual and power. Obviously, most commercial fisheries employ power equipment because the alternative is less efficient. With Alaskan salmon trolling, fishing lines are[..]

The most basic piece of equipment required for fishing is fishing tackle. Fishing tackle is a generic term that refers to equipment such as lures, bait, lines, rods, reels, nets and trawls, downriggers, outriggers, gaffs, harpoons, clevises, floats, and traps. The kind of fishing tackle that you will require depends on the kind of fish that you are angling to catch. It will also be dictated by your experience in fishing. A fishing tackle can be as simple as a soda can with fishing line attached to it, or a pole with a line tied to the end. These simple forms of fishing tackle are used to fish near the bank. Advanced users may want to consider a rod and reel arrangement. This type of[..]

Trolling or angling is a fishing method that uses baited fishing lines. These fishing lines are drawn through the water while being attached to the rear part of a moving boat. To keep this boat moving, some sort of a special motor must be used. It should be the one that creates little noise so as not to disturb the fishes and spoil the whole fishing experience. This is where the trolling motor comes in. What really is a trolling, anyway? This is a small engine affixed to the bow or stern of an angler's boat (a fishing boat can range from two to four person pleasure boat) that provides source of power for slowly trolling a lure or natural bait through water where fish are sought, or to[..]

Locating the fish is an essential skill when fishing. Knowing where they are hiding will let you put your baits in the right place. With pike it can be a good idea to lure the fish closer in by pre-baiting. Many pike anglers like distance techniques for pike. They will use extra strong gear not unlike heavy sea fishing beach rods that can cast big weights up to two hundred yards. Radio control floating craft are even used to take the ground bait to a distant hot spot and dump it there! There is no doubt that this method will catch fish, but it does have the disadvantage of reducing your contact with the fish and your ability to feel or notice a take. If dressed appropriately with Gortex rain gear you can reap rewards from Mother Nature's dinner bell! The timing has to be right! With a lengthy consistent weather window it makes for good 'get out there and fish' weather. There's something to be said for landing fish on equipment that's rated for half the size of what your going after. Using a fly fishing blank tied up as a spinning rod is the perfect partner for light line. Fly rod blanks tend to come in longer lengths which is a good thing to consider when using light line. The energy of fish pulling on the line is distributed though out the length of the rod. Here is a way to demonstrate this point. Set the drag on your real to where you think it should be. Grab the line twelve inches above the reel and pull. Make a note of how much tension or force it requires for your drag to engage. Now grab your line several feet after the end of your rod. Here's my biggest tip: If you aren't a professional angler, there is no need to spend more than fifty bucks on a fishing rod. I'm of course referring to most freshwater fishing. My favorite rods (that I've had for years) cost me about thirty bucks each. There is no need to break the bank when buying a fishing rod. By the time he is able to whip around to where I am pointing I'm already in full sprint, running down the warm wet sand. The frenzy is often short lived and no time is wasted getting to the action. One reason jigs have become so popular is their ease of use. You find a place you want to fish. You determine the depth of the hole your fishing. Then adjust your float to that depth and you are fishing. It is a good idea to use a longer steelhead rod then you may normally. I like rods in the eight to ten foot range. The longer rod allows me to keep the line from my float to my rod tip out of the current and presents a more natural drift. You can use the shorter rods though I use shorter rods in the smaller steams that I fish. They are easier for me to control especially when the bank is grown over with willows and other shrubs. I also like to use a swivel and a lighter leader so if I do[..]
